Essential Glass Tools Every Leadlight Artist Needs
Whether you're just starting out in leadlight or looking to upgrade your toolkit, having the right tools makes all the difference. Here's our guide to the essential equipment every glass artist needs.
1. Running Pliers — The Backbone of Glass Cutting
A good pair of running pliers is the most used tool in any glass studio. The Leponitt PRP-1 8" Metal Runner is our top choice — its 25mm wide jaw provides a secure grip, and the adjustable screw prevents crushing the glass during the break. The replaceable rubber sleeves mean these pliers will last for years.
Pro tip: Always use the concave jaw on the upper side of the glass when running a break. This puts even pressure along the score line for a clean, predictable break.
2. Grozing Pliers — For Those Imperfect Cuts
No matter how steady your hand, you'll occasionally need to nibble away small pieces of glass. That's where grozing pliers come in. The PCJ-1 Leponitt 6" Grozing Pliers feature a 3/8" serrated jaw that gives you precise control for nibbling along uneven scored lines.
They're also excellent as general breaking pliers for parting thin scrap — making them one of the most versatile tools in your kit.
3. The Humble Burnisher
Often overlooked, a plastic burnisher like the SANT-2 Leponitt Plastic Burnisher is incredibly useful. Use it to:
- Open lead channels before fitting glass
- Smooth copper foil for a clean finish
- Remove excess putty during construction
At 7" long with a comfortable grip, it's a tool you'll reach for constantly.
4. Lead Vise — Don't Skip This
Working with lead came requires a firm grip. The SLV-2 Leponitt Lead Vise is made from die-cast aluminium alloy with serrated jaws that hold lead securely without slipping. The spring-loaded mechanism lets you operate it one-handed, speeding up your workflow considerably.
5. Pattern Scissors — Accuracy Matters
When cutting patterns for lead work, standard scissors won't cut it. The SL-204 Leponitt Pattern Scissors have a precise 1.8mm spacing that accounts for the thickness of the lead came, ensuring your finished piece matches your pattern exactly. The stainless steel blades stay sharp through heavy use.
